Istanbul, Turkey: Sultanahmet Koftecisi

Istanbul is a beautiful city and has so much to offer to tourists. However, one of the few things that might put tourists off during their visit to the city might be the lack of variety in food. The most common food items offered in the eateries there were meatballs and grilled chicken, and this can get boring…. Very. Quickly. Hence, I wasn’t expecting to be wow-ed when I entered Sultanahmet Koftecisi which was located near Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern. This eatery only serves two kinds of meats, namely meatballs and lamb shesh kebap.

Lamb Shesh Kebap

Both dishes were very tasty and juicy! I must forewarn you though that if you do not fancy the strong smell of lamb, it’s best to consume the kebap whilst its still hot. Oh yes, and remember to ask for chilli sauce to accompany the meat, something that was so rare in Turkey but reminded me so fondly of home.

I also had the sweet samolinacake for dessert (which I forgot to capture, hence the lack of a photograph). Don’t be fooled by its humble appearance for it was light, fluffly and sweet – a perfect end to the meal!

When I was in Istanbul with two friends, we also visited this shop. At first we “were not hungry” so we only ordered one plate of the meatballs to share… it was devoured in two seconds so in the end we ordered a plate each! The pickled chillis went very well with the flavour of the meat. Wish I could go back!
